Developing a Case Study

I watched the episode opening of a show called Dan Da Dan. Genre is action, Sci-Fi, and romance.

This is identified as the Eye-line match cut which demonstrates the main character's attention being drawn by the events next to her, showing her interest first and following it up with what sparked it. The audience is supposed to be interested in what she might be viewing that stops her suddenly in her tracks and sets up the foundation of the story.

This is identified as screen direction which specifically shows the main character is walking towards the man in black. This is shown through her legs in a walking position and towards a certain side of the hallway in which the only final destination is the guy. This shows the audience that she might find some type of interest in the boy if she is directly heading towards him.

This is identified as a shot/reverse shot because there is a continuous pattern of going back and forth between these two characters and their intense conversation. This is shown through their expressions and the repetition of this cut. The audience should take from this that the two characters may be equally important to the plot due to the duration of each cut as well.

This can be identified as a montage as it shows many different shots within a short duration. This is to give the audience a good introduction of the place and its creepy parts which add to the mystery part of this opening. It sets the scene for the following events.

These cuts are continuous because they display the exact same action due to the characters lack of movement, simply from different angles and shots but still display the same scene and precise action. This gives the audience a good look of how small the character is compared to the place, making it seem powerful and something to be afraid of, but then goes back to the most important thing up close; the character.

This transition is identified as a wipe in which the scene with the shoes wipes vertically and replaces the main character laying on the desk. This shows the contrast between her frustration and later events which may have an effect on how she feels. This suggests the importance of the scene to the audience and gives the feel of impact this scene may have on the story, almost like a problem and solution order.
