Camera Angles, Shots, Movement, Composition In a Movie
The TV show I was watching today is called Prison Break and the genre is drama and action, and I focused on identifying and analyzing camera angles, shots, movement, and composition.
Shots:
Over the shoulder- it presented a sincere conversation and shot in which we get to see the character's face clearly along with her expression and the man that may be causing it, the one that his shoulder is the one being looked over. This shows a cause-and-effect situation linking her sadness and his presence or words.
Close-up was showing his expression and feelings, telling a lot about his view of the current situation and a hint of his deep thoughts to reveal more of his nature to the audience.
Two-shot introducing a new character and a bit of his relationship to the main character, along with his style suggesting cold weather and displaying his regular actions and unique movement with hands, gangster like.
Angles:
Eye-level when normal conversation is held and characters are presented at a normal height, not drawing the audience's focus away from the conversation with any unnecessary distractions. This helps the audience pay closer attention to what the characters are discussing and the physical action of the scene.
Low angle was used to show a mother's authority and how much power she has especially in this house over the high angle which shows her son and his difficult position as he has no choice but to listen and obey. This demonstrates their relationship to the audience.
Composition:
Deep focus where it shows all the characters and how everyone is going through something in this jail, pulling the focus from just the two of them, but rather focusing on the vast actions all around them. This shows the audience that their situation is no different than many others' yet in some way it highlights their need to be normal and obey the rules.
Frame is used to draw the audience's attention to what the character is looking at, giving us a hint of what he is thinking as well as addressing the camera and its position which may be used for foreshadowing later events.
Movement:
Pull-out shows vast prison and emphasizes his smallness in the new and menacing environment. He comes off as a strong character, but this movement gives the audience the idea that he is somewhat stranded and he himself is in shock. This presents more information on both the character and his environment along with his current situation.
Pull-in was very slow and gave a vibe that something wrong was about to happen, enhancing the mystery and tension of the scene. It suggests to the audience that they need to pay attention and foreshadows an abnormal scene to come.
