Creating the perfect shot!

Today I was practicing Mise-en-scene by carefully creating my own image that constructs meaning and representation.

I used a photo of me and my father on a train in New York and broke it down into every characteristic of mise-en-scene.

First, I focused on the decor and props. To demonstrate the idea that we are traveling, I used the suitcase and bag my father is holding along with the brand-new clothes that are in my shopping bag. Then for the actual train, it is easy to spot the sign in the background that entails the location, JFK airport in New York, establishing context and setting. The bright lighting from the big windows of the train creates an uplifting mood and tone for the picture, reflecting on happier context. For custom, my dad is wearing a nice polo and dress pants for a business casual trip, suggesting purpose, and I am wearing some cute and modern-day clothing that is fit for a trip in the city, representing teen clothing as well. It is close framing that gives the feeling of being trapped, dealing with a closed train that is fairly high up. The blocking for this shot is two people standing up and holding the pole that is an average prop for a train and are in the middle of the cart to suggest importance.
